2024 World Cultures Festival

Come attend this FREE event open to our school and community! Bring a blanket to picnic on the lawn, a water bottle to stay hydrated and enjoy food, activities, crafts and performances from around the world.
Click on the link below to host/join a country table or donate food! It’s a great way to meet other Grant families that share your culture.
Come wearing traditional clothing, sports jerseys from around the world, t-shirts, hats, socks, etc from a country or culture of choice (kids can wear their cultural outfit to school on Friday, the day of the event!)

GENERAL INFORMATION

What is the date and time of the event? Friday, September 27, 2024 from 3:30 PM – 6 PM
Where is the location? Grant Big Yard (a map of the setup will be provided).
What is the cost of the event? The event is free for all attendees with free food.
What is the procedure for the volunteers entering/staying on campus? All volunteers need to be provided with a Visitor’s Badge at the front office. If you are cleared to volunteer and are already in the school’s system, your badge will be ready for pickup at the front office. If you are not in the school’s system, please stop by the office with a valid ID/Drivers License. You will be provided a badge there. This can be done any day prior to the event.
NOTE: You can still volunteer at this event even if you are not yet cleared to volunteer at school.
What time does the setup start? On the Day-of: As early as 1:30 pm on September 27th.
All loaned tables/tents need to be labeled with name and phone number.
What time is the clean up? 6 pm onward until everything is put away and school is returned to its original state.
What do we need for our country’s set up? If you are able to supply your own table (1-2) and a pop-up canopy, please do so. If you are not able to supply those, please contact Yvonne Kawano at diversity@grantpta.org or you can reach out to her on Konstella.
Where can we get ideas for sharing our culture? Consider reaching out to your local cultural center, embassy, places of worship etc. You may also contact diversity@grantpta.org to get access to last year’s album for the event.
FOOD AND SNACKS
NOT ALLOWED: Alcoholic beverages, cooking, heating, flames, refrigeration (ok to bring your cooler*)
Please add your food contributions to the following spreadsheet if you have not already: Konstella sign-ups
What items can we bring? Food, snacks, dessert, drinks, etc. Consider avoiding easily perishable food (mayonnaise based, fish, egg, etc.). Please label with gluten-free, nut-free, dairy, vegan, etc. if applicable.
- We highly encourage everyone to bring a reusable water bottle.
How much food should we bring? Whatever amount that is in your budget (Expecting 400-500 attendees, while supplies last)
How should the food be served? Consider bite-sized food that is easily served. Consider wearing gloves, masks, and hair pulled back while serving food.
Who will serve the food? We need volunteers to serve the food. You may ask friends and family to help serve at your booth.
Cost of food: This event is free to attend with free food. For financial assistance with purchasing food items, supplies, etc. please reach out to Florencia Rams at the Front Office ASAP (frams@smmusd.org).
Food Storage: Non-perishable food can be stored as early as Wednesday Sept 25th. Please drop off items in Ms. Florencia Rams office in the front office. Perishable food needs to be brought to the Grant Big yard between 2:15-3:15 pm on the day of the event.
What serving ware do we need? The PTA will provide a limited number of plates and napkins. Please try to bring your own plates/bowls/cups/napkins for serving. Feel free to bring any serving ware that you may need*.
*Please label your personal items with your name and phone number so they can be returned to you.
ACTIVITIES, SPORTS, ARTS & CRAFTS

Sports, Arts & Crafts: Konstella sign-ups
How long should the activity be? Sport demos: between 3-5+ minutes. Activities (e.g. Arts, crafts): For the duration of the event or until supplies last.
Who can we contact to coordinate our sports demo with? We have no sports lead at the moment. If you would like to be a sports lead, please contact Yvonne Kawano diversity@grantpta.org
Who can we contact to coordinate our arts and crafts with? Find the lead for your culture/country on the Konstella sign-ups and reach out to them on Konstella. If your culture/country is not represent on Konstella, please feel free to sign up as lead for that culture/country.
SAFETY RULES FOR VOLUNTEER WORKERS
- Ladders, scaffolds, and aerial lifts may not be used. Only stepstools that are 32 inches or less in height may be used for overhead work.
- Only non-powered hand tools may be used. Hand held power tools and wheeled or portable power equipment may not be used under any circumstance. This would include power washers, powered saws, air compressors, and spray painting equipment. The use of vacuum cleaners is an exception.
- Only water base paints using roller or brush application may be used. Sanding of painted surfaces is not permitted.
- Hazardous chemicals may not be used. Only low hazard cleaners approved by the District may be used.
- Safety glasses, conforming to ANSI standards, must be worn by all workers whenever there is a potential for flying chips, paint splatter, chemical splash, or dust generation.
- Appropriate work gloves must be worn by workers if there is any handling of sharp or rough objects. Non-permeable gloves must be worn when using paints or cleaners.
- All workers must wear closed-toe, low heeled shoes with slip resistant soles.
- No individual should lift more than 20 lbs. alone.
- Student volunteers must always be supervised by a responsible adult. The ratio of supervisor to student workers should not be less than one to seven.
- Only district maintenance employees and qualified contractors are authorized to access the roofs.
- Volunteer workers must not access attics, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, electrical equipment rooms or mechanical equipment rooms.
REGLAS DE SEGURIDAD PARA TRABAJADORES VOLUNTARIOS
- Las escalas, los andamios y las plataformas aéreas no pueden utilizarse. Sólo las banquetas que tienen 32 pulgadas o menos de altura pueden ser usadas para el trabajo sobre la cabeza.
- Solo herramientas manuales no eléctricas pueden ser usadas. Las herramientas eléctricas manuales y equipos de potencia con ruedas o portátiles no pueden ser usados bajo ninguna circunstancia. Esto incluiría lavadoras eléctricas (power washers), sierras eléctricas, compresores de aire y equipos de pintura en aerosol. El uso de aspiradoras es una excepción.
- Sólo pinturas a base de agua que utilizan la aplicación con rodillo o brocha se pueden utilizar. Lijado de superficies pintadas no es permitido.
- Productos químicos peligrosos no se pueden usar. Sólo los productos de limpieza de bajo riesgo aprobados por el Distrito se pueden utilizar.
- Anteojos de seguridad, conforme a las normas ANSI, deben ser usados por todos los trabajadores cada vez que hay un riesgo de partículas volantes, salpicaduras de pintura, salpicaduras de productos químicos, o producción de polvo.
- Guantes de trabajo apropiados deben ser usados por los trabajadores si hay alguna manipulación de objetos cortantes o ásperos. Guantes impermeables deben ser usados con el uso de pinturas o productos de limpieza.
- Todos los trabajadores deben usar zapatos cerrados sin tacones con suelas antideslizantes.
- Ningún individuo debería levantar más de 20 libras solo.
- Los estudiantes voluntarios siempre deben estar supervisados por un adulto responsable. La proporción de supervisor por estudiantes trabajadores no debería ser menos de uno a siete.
- Sólo los empleados de mantenimiento del distrito y los contratistas calificados están autorizados a tener acceso a los techos.
- Los trabajadores voluntarios no deben tener acceso a los áticos, sótanos no terminados, espacios pequeños para movilizarse (crawl spaces), cuartos de equipo eléctrico o cuartos de equipo mecánico.
