Family Math Night FAQs
Q: What is Family Math Night?
A: Family Math Night is a free, fun-filled evening hosted by the Grant PTA. During this event, teachers open their classrooms to kids and their adults to participate in math-oriented activities.
Q: Will there be food?
A: Yes! There will be pizza! Please RSVP via the link above so we can have an accurate count. Kindly dispose of your trash in the bins around school and remember to bring a reusable water bottle.
Q: Can we join the event later than 5 pm? Do we have to stay for its entirety?
A: You may join the event at any time and you may leave at any time before the event ends. Please note that the Estimation Stations and the food are scheduled for 5 – 5:25 PM. Estimation Stations close promptly at 5:25 PM and no submissions will be accepted after then. There will be a drawing with prizes at the end of the event.
Q: Do I have to accompany my child to various classrooms?
A: Yes! This event is meant for kids and their adults to participate in the math games and activities together. All kids have to be accompanied by an adult when visiting a class.
Q: What if a math game is too advanced for my child?
A: Many of the games can be adapted to match the skill level of your child. Using smaller numbers, fewer digits, using addition instead of multiplication, grouping instead of “dividing” are ways to make the games easier for younger children.
Q: Do we have to play all the games?
A: No! Your family can play as few or as many games as desired. For TK-K students, a minimum of 2 games, and for grades 1-5, a minimum of 3 games is required to receive a small prize.
Q: What if the classroom we want to visit does not have room for us?
A: Please move to your next choice of class and come back after the rotation is over.
Q: Can we leave the class and go to the next one as soon as we are done with the game?
A: No! There will be 4 rotations, each about 15 minutes. When the end of each rotation is announced, you may proceed to the next class of your choice. A schedule will be provided at the beginning of the event.
Q: How do kids show that they have completed the games?
A: Kids will be provided a passport to collect stamps from the teachers upon completing each game. Please be sure to retain the passport and turn it in at the end of the event to collect a small prize.
Q: What are the prizes and drawing?
A: This is when prizes will be awarded from the Estimation Station activity. Students who guess the closest number of Legos or toys will win a prize. In addition, Principal Fuhrer will draw names for students to come on stage and select a prize from the prize table. This portion of the event will end by 7:15PM. NO EXCEPTIONS.
